Retired boxing legend Oscar De La Hoya has entered a California rehabilitation facility to be treated for a substance abuse problem.

Sources say that De La Hoya, 38, voluntarily checked into the rehab facility within the past few weeks "to address certain health and personal issues." The name and location of the facility and the nature of his substance abuse problem were not immediately known.

"After doing an honest evaluation of myself, I recognize that there are certain issues that I need to work on,"
De La Hoya said in a statement.
"Like everyone, I have my flaws, and I do not want to be one of those people that is afraid to admit and address those flaws."

The statement went on to say,
"Throughout my career and my life, I have always met all challenges head-on, and this is no different. I am confident that with the support of my family and friends, I will become a stronger, healthier person."

De La Hoya asked for "respect and privacy" as he undergoes treatment.

The 1992 Olympic gold medal winner has been active on Twitter in recent weeks.

De La Hoya wrote on Friday,
"Take a deep breathe and let out all that anger that makes you hate.it really is going to be o.k."
and
"Stop finding excuses not to live. life is controlled by what you make of it and not of what it makes of you."

De La Hoya had a career record of 39-6, winning 10 world titles in six different weight classes before retiring in 2009.
