UPDATE: Racist Gunman Charged For Killing 9 People in Church Shooting!

UPDATE 6/19/15:
Dylann Roof, the man accused of killing nine people at a Charleston, South Carolina, church on Wednesday, has been charged with nine counts of homicide and possession of a firearm during commission of a violent crime.
One law enforcement official told CNN that alleged the shooter told investigators that he "wanted to start a race war" when he walked into the Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston on Wednesday night and opened fire on a Bible study class.
All of the victims were black.



Everyone's talking about this today as 9 innocent people were killed in a South Carolina Church shooting from what Police are calling a hate crime. 


The suspect is now in custody but South Carolina law says this can't be prosecuted as a hate crime?

A white gunman opened fire during a prayer meeting inside a historic black church in downtown Charleston, S.C., on Wednesday night, killing 9 people in what officials describe as a hate crime. The suspect, 21-year-old Dylann Roof, was captured by police in North Carolina on Thursday.




Here's what we know so far..

  • 9 people were killed in a shooting at the Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church, a historic black church in Charleston, S.C., Wednesday night.
  • Gunman, 21 year old Dylann Roof,  attended a bible study class at the church for about an hour before openingfire, officials said.
  • Victims included S.C. State Sen. Clementa Pinckney, a pastor at the church.
  • President Obama condemned the killings as another example of mass gun violence.


 Names of victims released: At a press briefing, Charleston County Coroner Rae Wooten released the full list of names and ages of the 9 victims of Wednesday's church shooting:


  • Cynthia Hurd, 54, a manager with the Charleston County Public Library system.
  • Ethel Lance, 70, a retiree who recently worked as a church janitor
  • Rev. Clementa Pinckney, 41, a South Carolina state senator and pastor at the church
  • Susie Jackson, 87, a longtime member of the church
  • Depayne Middleton Doctor, 49, former Charleston County community development director
  • Sharonda Coleman-Singleton, 45, a church pastor, speech therapist and a high school girls' track coach
  • Myra Thompson, 59, a pastor at the church
  • Rev. Daniel Simmons, Sr., 74, another pastor at the church
  • Tywanza Sanders, 26, a 2014 graduate of Allen University, where Pinckney was also an alum

Autopsies will be performed on each victim.

To top it off, according to CivilRights.Org, 44 states could prosecute the #CharlestonShooting as a hate crime — but not South Carolina.
