Is This MTV’s New “Jersey Shore”?!

Seems like MTV has moved on from depicting young partying Italian-Americans to young partying GREEK-Americans. And just as “Jersey Shore,” MTV’s new show “Growing Up Greek” has caused some uproar!

Find out what the Town is Talking about below:

TARPON SPRINGS, Florida — The Florida town best-known for its beautiful sponge docks, delicious food and of course Greek culture. Now the town is about to get a national spotlight in the TV show "Growing Up Greek."

The MTV special set to air Wednesday night on the cable network follows a group of young Greek-Americans in Tarpon Springs.

“You’re going to see us hanging out with all of our friends doing what kids in [Tarpon Springs] do,” said Demi King who’s on the show.

And that means you’ll see King, Ioanna Koursiotis and Barbie Berkins living life with friends and family.

“We’re the sponge capital of the world, we’re Epiphany city,” said Berkins.

There’s a lot of fun, a lot of family and of course some drama.

"It doesn't matter if you’re Greek, Spanish, Chinese or Japanese; there's always going to be drama whether you like it or not,” said Koursiotis.

But not everyone is on board with the idea of the show. Critics started a petition on Change.org  to have the show rewritten or canceled saying it’s a “gross misrepresentation of what it means to grow up Greek” and that it “lessens the community to look like Jersey Shore.”

So far more than 5,000 people have signed the petition but the stars of the show say those 55 seconds in the promo don’t tell the whole story.

“You cannot judge a book by its cover,” said Demi’s mother Marika Fikaris King.
“They got to see the family aspect of it our religion our culture,” said King. “The 55 seconds just wasn't enough.”

It’s a story and how can people judge when they haven’t seen the whole story,” said Ioanna’s mother Catherine Kouriotis.

“Growing Up Greek” premieres Wednesday, December 3rd at 10pm. Will YOU be watching?
